Midway has finally announced a European release date for the PS3 port of Unreal Tournament 3 - February 22, 2008. The game has already sold over 1.2 million copies, and we suspect it’ll move a few more once it hits the PAL territories. No word on an Australian release date.

I get the feeling we don’t give enough love to those crippled by their love of the apple shaped logo. Never fear macheads, for your yearly game is soon coming courtesy of renowned Mac porters MacSoft. The game of course is none other than Unreal Tournament III. There’s no specific time frame other then “early 2008″, but then again you’ve always been a patient bunch.

Despite the huge amount of publicity Crysis has received, the title has not managed to convert this into performance on the sales charts. The title to date has sold a measly 86,633 units since its launch date of November 13th. Unreal Tournament 3 is doing even worse, selling only 33,995 since its November 19th release. Both games share the fact that a major system upgrade is needed for most people to get the best out of them.
Is this the consumer’s message to developers to throttle back the spec requirements of games, or a growing indifference toward the FPS genre?

North American gamers who bought UT3 today were disappointed to discover that their PS3 version of the game cannot yet accept mods made on the PC editor. Despite interplatform modding acting as a big drawcard of the game, there appears to be no means for the PC editor to package the .ini, .ut3, and .u files necessary for other mods into a format that can be extracted and installed by the game’s import content function. As Epic team member Josh Adams explains on the official forums:
However, the PS3 mod tools aren’t quite ready yet. We are working through some final legal/release issues.
When it’s ready, you will need to download the latest PC patch and another PS3 Mod Tools “patch” that adds the full PS3 mod support to the PC version.
You will have to cook ypur mods for the PS3 specifically. You will also need removable media (memory card, USB drive, etc) to transfer the mod from your PC to your PS3.

Ageia have announced plans to release a mod kit designed around its PhysX GPU, which will give modders “everything they need to easily add PhysX-powered content into the UT3 universe.” After Mark Rein announced earlier this year that UT3 mods will be able to slide across all platforms, this offering from Ageia is sure to encourage a healthy amount of user-created content for the game. Available in December, the kit will include additional tools, guides, tutorials and documentation and assets and examples to complement the game’s existing mod tools.

The PC version of the highly-anticipated Unreal Tournament 3 has been given a release date for North America. The game is set to hit shelves on November 19th, and while it has not been officially announced, is expected in Europe on the 23rd.
Sadly no dates have been eluded to for either the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360. Things are sounding good for the console versions though, with Epic’s Mark Rein saying this about the PS3 build:
“I was playing the PS3 build for a few hours tonight and it is really, really fantastic, […] It’s amazingly smooth and solid. I think you PS3 users are in for a huge treat with UT3.”

Jerry O’Flaherty, art director of Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3 and Command & Conquer has landed his first gig as director of a feature film, with Warner Bros. upcoming CG-animated Thundercats movie.
O’Flaherty is currently working on the script with Paul Sopocy, and plans to remain faithful to the franchise that children of the 80’s will remember so well. Speaking of the jump from games to movies, O’Flaherty told Variety:
It feels like a natural thing for me to step into, […] Games have come so far now. The last four years of my life have been about bringing the energy of filmmaking into the videogame experience.
