Time to get all excited again because another morsel of Spore news has been let loose. This time the news comes from an unexpected place, MacWorld. Of course being that the announcement was at MacWorld the news is that Spore will be released simultaneously on both Mac and PC later this year. Yeah, we have heard “later this year” from the Spore team before but we will forgive them if they don’t break our hearts again. EA Maxis VP of marketing Patrick Buechner had this to say about EA’s decision to bring Spore to the Mac:
“[We] think the Macintosh user is somebody who is, typically, a creative individual. Part of the appeal of the Mac is that it allows you to do creative things very easily. And we think that lines up very closely with what you can do with Spore … So it just feels like a natural place for Spore to be, and we’re thinking about it up front rather than as an afterthought.”
An official announcement is expected later today along with a preview at MacWorld.

Will Wright has confirmed that Spore will be making it to the Wii. In an interview by the Guardian he had this to say on the subject:
We’re doing Spore on the Wii, and we did MySims. It takes significant re-thinking to work out how you’re going to do it. PS3 and Xbox 360 are similar enough that you can basically use the same system for both. So it comes down to what the interesting major platforms are and which markets we want to hit.
Really makes you think how fun it could be wriggling your Wiimote around during the microbiological stage. The whole interview is rather interesting, with Will describing his home set up and what he likes to play.

Speaking in an interview with BBC’s Radio 5 Live, Spore creator Will Wright has said that the game is now “fully playable at this point and it’s in final testing”. So while there is no official release date at this point, Spring 2008 would be a safe bet.
“We’ve had to do a lot of testing to make sure that the game is accessible by a wide group of people…I want the people who have played The Sims to be able to play Spore - I don’t want it to be some thing just hardcore gamers play.”

As if I wasn’t excited enough about going to Leipzig already. Will Wright’s Spore, a life-simulation game seven years in the making, will be playable by journalists for the first time at the Leipzig Games Convention. While the concept of a bunch of people playing a game that you can’t play might not excite you that much, my high-definition video camera has assured me that it can hook you up with the next best thing to being there.
Subscribe to our RSS feed for in-depth coverage of the Leipzig Games Convention from August 23-26.
