The best video game wedding cake ever

June 3rd, 2008

The Super Mario Kart wedding cake.

I’ve seen plenty of video game cakes in my time - but they pale in comparison to this amazingly detailed piece of 100% edible art. I think I’d feel guilty eating a piece. Click through for close-ups.

Super Mario 2 with drumming - like video game music should be

January 25th, 2008

It’s a well known fact that drums make everything better. So it’s no surprise then that Italian drummer Andrea Vadrucci’s drumming to the 8-bit melodies of Super Mario 2 makes it phenomenal. Someone should really get together with this guy and produce some banging Nintendo covers. Not like that hasn’t been done before.

Knit your own Mario mushrooms

January 14th, 2008

Knit your own Mario mushrooms

While at home or at work, or whenever separated from our consoles, it’s always nice to have a reminder of our favorite pastime nearby. And if none of the many over-priced figurines take your fancy, perhaps something a little DIY/rustic will - such as these hand-knitted Mario mushrooms. You will probably have to get someone else to knit these for you as they’re not for sale. Once you do lock that lucky person in to the task, be sure to download the pattern from here.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games DS trailer

December 20th, 2007

It’s weird enough having Sonic in Super Smash Bros Brawl, but having both Sonic and Mario in a game developed by Sega where they don’t kick the crap out of each other is just blasphemous. Apart from the obvious moral outrage we haven’t got much apart from ambivalent feelings towards Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Unless they pull out something massive that isn’t in the video it looks like it’ll be a little dull. But do check out the above trailer for the DS version of the game to form your own (perhaps more optimistic) opinion.

Fan does Paper Mario DS

December 6th, 2007

Some clever gamer has made his own version of Paper Mario DS…out of paper. The only thing I’m disappointed about is that something so cool was filmed on what looks to be a camera phone - someone get this guy some real gear!

October 5th, 2007

Mario and Luigi air fresheners.

The hygienic folks at Deal Extreme have added Mario and Luigi air fresheners to their extremely cheap catalog. With the scent of the fresheners being a mystery, we sure hope they don’t smell like Italian plumbers. The pack including both videogame icons sells for $7.61, with free shipping.

Automatic Mario levels taken to new, musical extremes

September 17th, 2007

Once upon a time, long before this site existed, someone with a lot of spare time on their hands hacked Super Mario World, adding a level that completed itself without any input from the user.

I’m not sure they were aware of quite how far the obsessive-compulsive meme-junkies that inhabit the dark corners of the internet were going to take this obscure new pastime.

Now the “Automatic Mario” meme has been cross-pollinated with the end theme from the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Hare Hare Yukai, a rampant internet phenomenon in and of itself. Yes, this hacked level completes itself and manages to sound like the end theme from an anime at the same time.

An undeniably brilliant effort that raises the question - where on earth will they take this one from here?
