John Carmack wants to make Quake DS

John Carmack recently told an audience at QuakeCon he is “pretty sure” that he will make Quake happen on the Nintendo DS.
My early inclination on this is to build a game that is definitely Quake Arena-themed… but leave it more or less Doom 2 style deathmatch with two-and-a-half-D.
Seems a strange design choice for someone who is supposedly a big fan of the Metroid Prime: Hunters control scheme - doesn’t he realize a straight port of Quake 3 Arena with MP: Hunters controls and online play would be the ultimate Nintendo DS game?
