Guitar Hero sued by The Romantics

November 22nd, 2007

the_romantics.jpg
These wonderful haircuts and their owners are mobilizing legal action against Activision, Harmonix, and Red Octane over their song “What I like About You” in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the ’80s. Seemingly worried that cover band Wavegroup Sound’s version will somehow “confuse the consumer” and detract from their sales, they are demanding the whole hog – the band wants to halt the sale of the game and accounting of all profits from the game, along with unspecified “compensatory and punitive” damages. For once the cover band gets it right, and the real band has to come along and spoil it for the rest of us.

After the South Park episode “Make Love, Not Warcraft” won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, Matt and Trey are set to take another swipe at video games - this time, the hugely popular Guitar Hero.

The episode called “Guitar Queer-o” follows Stan and Kyle, who are hooked on Guitar Hero. Stan’s superior shredding eventually leads to a breakdown in their friendship, as he pursues bigger scores with a better partner. The episode premieres on Wednesday, November 7 at 10pm on Comedy Central, and will no doubt be uploaded to every video hosting site known to man shortly afterward.

Activision launches Guitar Hero community site

October 12th, 2007

Guitar Hero community site

Ever wanted to be a rock god surrounded by groupies, but can’t be bothered learning an instrument? Activision is coming to the rescue with the launch of a Guitar Hero community site. While it’s currently little more than a teaser site, once Guitar Hero III hits on October 28, the site will allow players to earn groupies, find friends, compare scores and enter tournaments. Though the press release is a little obtuse, we presume that the site will operate similar to Bungie’s Halo 3 site.

Press release after the jump.

Sex Pistols re-record songs for Guitar Hero III

September 26th, 2007

sex-pistols-in-guitar-hero-iii.jpg

When Activision found themselves unable to locate the master recordings for the Sex Pistols songs they wanted in Guitar Hero III, their solution was simple - get the band back in the studio.

You have to admire their attention to detail too - they managed to get three original band members, the original producer and the same analog sound desk that was used to record “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols” involved in the process.

Guitar Hero III will be available in the US on October 28, for the Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 - including the Sex Pistols “Anarchy in the U.K” and other unannounced goodies.

New Guitar Hero II DLC for Xbox 360

September 20th, 2007

atreyu-in-guitar-hero-ii.jpg

A new song pack consisting of three new tracks is on the way to Guitar Hero II on the Xbox 360, priced at 500 Microsoft points - and this one comes complete with a peculiar bonus - the ability to make 24-year-old heavy music fans feel old, and long for the days before crappy melodic bits made it into otherwise half-decent tunes.

  • Trivium - Detonation (Listen)
  • Atreyu - Right Side of the Bed
  • Protest the Hero - Bury the Hatchet

Where is the Meshuggah? The Dillinger Escape Plan? Coalesce?

OK I give up…where did I put my walking frame?

First there was the Guitar Hero cake, then there was the Guitar Hero playing robot…now a LEGO-nut by the name of David McNeely has built a fully-functioning Guitar Hero controller using LEGO, and the guts of a PS2 guitar.
