Attach rate will define Grand Theft Auto IV’s success, not raw sales figures

April 17th, 2008

UBS analyst Ben Schachter has some tips for those of you planning on benchmarking Grand Theft Auto IV’s sales against previous iterations - namely, don’t.

Back when Vice City and San Andreas were flying off shelves, the PS2 and Xbox were the dominant platforms - and there’s nowhere near as many PS3s and Xbox 360s out there. Schachter rightfully proposes that GTA IV’s attach rate (number of units sold divided by the number of Xbox 360/PS3 consoles in homes) is the more accurate metric for success.

“Should Metacritic scores come in above 95, attach rates could rise to 30%+, implying potential U.S. sales of 7-8mm units (scores for the past three GTA titles were 95, 95, and 97). Any attach rate above 26% would beat expectations in our view,” he added.

Rockstar Games announce Social Club

April 15th, 2008

Rockstar announce Social Club for Grand Theft Auto IV.

Rockstar has announced a Bungie-esque leaderboard website called the Rockstar Games Social Club, set to launch alongside Grand Theft Auto IV on April 29. The site is compatible with Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, so players on both platforms will be able to track the virtual crimes they commit.

The first player to complete 100% of the single-player game will be immortalized, and the rest of you will have to be content competing for the fastest completion of the game or dominance of other, lesser statistics such as total miles walked.

Pre-registration starts on April 17, full press release after the jump.

PS3 outsells Wii in Japan

Sales data from Media Create has indicated that the PlayStation 3 outsold the Wii for the second time in Japan since the 40GB PS3 was launched. Overall sales figures were down 20%, with 39,178 PS3 units sold to 36,230 Wii units. While PS3 sales figures have increased in other countries, we don’t think this feat will be emulated outside Japan anytime soon.

When something has been boldly touted as a success, its quite often necessary for such a statement to be backed up by solid figures. Pretty solid feat considering Halo 3 was released only during the tail end of the month.

  • Microsoft Xbox 360: 527.8K (6.8 million total)
  • Nintendo Wii: 501K (4.5 million total)
  • Nintendo DS: 495.8K (13.2 million total)
  • Sony PlayStation 2: 215K (39.3 million total)
  • Sony PSP: 284.5K (8.6 million total)

After selling 22,000 units on the first week of its release, the PS3 title has entered the Japanese software chart at number 7. And despite its success during its initial week, Halo 3 lingers around the bottom of the top 30, indicative of Microsoft’s struggle to gain a foothold in this region.
