2K have released an update for the smash hit BioShock. The patch contains a few bug fixes and tweaks, but there is also a whole lot of new content. The most notable inclusion is the addition of a new plasmid called Sonic Boom which causes players to giggle like little schoolgirls and slap their arms together – OK, it really means you can blast baddies and objects away with a force, but let’s face it you’ll be doing the first one too. Also included are three new tonics Eve Saver (uses less eve per plasmid), Machine Buster (guess) and Vending Expert (pay less for goods).
They also added the ability to disable Vita-Chambers, just for the hardcore types. Turning off Vita-Chambers and finishing the game on hard will also net you a new achievement called “Brass Balls”.
PC users can download the patch from BioShock’s page below while Xbox 360 players can download it from Live Marketplace or let it happen automatically when they start up the game. Oh, and it’s free.

2K Games are riding the success of BioShock by forming another studio - primarily comprised of a portion of the crew that worked on BioShock. The new studio is expected to reside in the San Francisco Bay Area of Novato. The studio is currently looking for a lead animator, but if you have the prerequisite 8 years experience we are sure you would have heard about the position already.

This weekend Steam has knocked 20% off the price of both Bioshock and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. The markdown brings both these games from US$50 to a very affordable US$39.95. The offer is valid to Monday 26th, so you had better be snappy if you want to take advantage.

The winners of the British Academy Video Games Awards for 2007 were announced today, with Wii Sports taking a whopping 6 awards from a total of 15. The game was actually nominated for 7 awards, but lost the Best Game category to 2K’s BioShock. Suspiciously, some of the games nominated are yet to be released, though none of them won awards. Check after the jump for a full list of the winners.

BioShock is one of the best sounding games ever released, so it stands to reason that when 2K do a competition they focus on that. Fans of great sound have the chance to win a very fancy surround sound speaker set by NHT. As per usual, the contest is only open to the US. To enter click the link below.

As if we needed further proof that Bioshock has made it to cultural icon status - Big Daddy and Little Sister have joined the ranks of Britney Spears, Fidel Castro, Jesus and 200+ other nostalgic images expertly rendered by the Flickr artist known as “The Etchasketchist”. Apparently this ephemeral masterpiece was twiddled together in 40 minutes, which is about how long it takes me to get frustrated and give up on several dismal attempts at a peaceful country scene.

You’re probably all too familiar with the hype surrounding this game, and if you haven’t bought it already, I’m guessing you’re either harboring some healthy skepticism or are simply penny-wise. But during the many hours spent playing this game, I can assure you that this skeptic was truly riveted by its well-told story and the superbly crafted city of Rapture.

BioShocked, that is. The Xbox 360 version of BioShock has debuted at #1 with a bullet, with the PC version sneaking in at #4 - behind both versions of Singstar 90’s (Would you like microphones with that, sir?)
We just hope you had the foresight to pre-order your copy of BioShock - reports from the land down under lead us to believe that even JB Hi-Fi is having trouble keeping stock on the shelves.
Thanks to GfK for yet more concrete evidence of how predictable software sales trends in Australia really are.

Turns out the journos who attended Leipzig aren’t the only lot that haven’t had a chance to play BioShock yet - Valve boss Gabe Newell has banned his employees from playing the game until Half-Life: Episode Two and The Orange Box are finished. He recently told CVG:
We had to ban Bioshock from our offices […] Nobody gets to play it until Orange Box is done - that’s our reward to ourselves as a company; everyone gets a copy of Bioshock.
Talk about sugar-coated sour.
