Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Review (PC)

Mid-mission saves remain absent from the PC version, and you are still left guessing where you will resume from if you get killed. Limited longevity may also continue to haunt the PC version, although players will find plenty of mileage in the multiplayer side, which is exactly the same as the 360 version – apart from the fact you can now use Mega Man and Frank West from Dead Rising as playable characters. There are 8 maps which may each be a little oversized for the 16 players they allow. Hopefully, online play will increase to a point where a 32-player mode can be added with a patch.

Despite hardly any differences between versions, there will be no cross-platform game play. While this is generally not a desirable feature, it would be nice to make use of the steady population already playing on Live while the game builds its critical mass in order to fill online games with PC players. The few servers you will find online will at least, this time, have their pings displayed in milliseconds.

Lost Planet did not exactly break new ground for shooters, but it certainly managed to prove that simple and effective gameplay, big guns, bugs and gob-smacking visuals could make for plenty of entertaining hours.

While the platform translation did its best to remedy some shortcomings, most notably the awkward control scheme, the sub-par plot and short-lived campaign are faithful to the original. Regardless, your trigger finger will get plenty of exercise as you tangle with aliens in the unforgiving tundra.

The main problem is that more finely tuned shooters on PC put this port to shame, despite its success on the 360. It’s also likely that frugal gamers will pass this one up in favor of upcoming titles, which promise to utilize DX10 on a far more impressive scale, such as Crysis.
