PlayStation 3 DivX playback confirmed

PS3 officially getting DivX playback

The rumors that the PlayStation 3 will be getting DivX functionality have been confirmed. Though many of your eyes are lighting up at the prospect of playing all that downloaded content you have stored away, there are many legitimate uses that Sony can use DivX for. With GT TV and other services Sony plans to offer, DivX integration would be a boon, saving bandwidth and storage space. Game developers can also reap the benefits of saving space with DivX encoded FMVs, though that has never really been a problem with the size of Blu-ray discs.

Users who noticed that the PS3 with 2.00 firmware identifies DivX movies were right on the money, as development kits using the 2.00 SDK are able play DivX files. It is reported that the function will be enabled for home users in the form of a small patch due to arrive shortly.

Lets face it though - this is all about turning your PS3 into a media center and utilizing all that downloaded content you have. With the ability to upgrade your PS3 with any 2.5″ SATA drive, turning your PS3 into media center is a very tasty idea even before you think about Blu-ray.

We still have no more news on the Xbox 360’s DivX plans but we all know how Microsoft hates to be left behind. I think we can expect news by the end of the week on that front.
