ID Software

At Quakecon today, John Carmack introduced the fruits of id’s last 18 months, a franchise called Rage. The game, which is not just an action-based first-person shooter, will use id’s Tech 5 cross-platform engine to allow a simultaneous launch on PC, Mac, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Read on for more details, and video.

Tim Hollenshed, CEO of id Software, explained “It’s more than just a first-person shooter, we will show vehicles and racetracks, driving and racing elements…It is an action-oriented game but with a lot of adventure elements. It will be story driven, but you can also choose your own route to go through things.”

In addition to indoor and outdoor shooting elements, players will be treated to combat and racing on fully customizable vehicles.

It will be the first title to run on Tech 5, the engine which will allow the developer to create games for Mac, the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 simultaneously by using identical media for all four platforms. The success of the engine will allow id’s future franchises to escape the headaches of multi-platform development, and there is talk of future versions of existing id titles using it as well.
