Konami have unveiled the next two titles in their Silent Hill series – Silent Hill Origins for PSP and Silent Hill V for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. A portable version would seemingly require some skill to pull off, but from the screens that follow, it looks very promising. The 2008 release of Silent Hill V also guarantees to set the standard for survival horror on the current Gen consoles.

Silent Hill Origins is the prequel to the first in the series, and follows lone truck-driver Travis O’Grady into the eerie town. O’Grady encounters an apparition of Alessa (from the original), and quickly learns that he needs to get out of the town as quickly as possible. But escaping Silent Hill is not going to be easy, with crippling childhood memories coming to twisted life in the game.

The camera system and controls used in Origins, reportedly enhanced for the portable system, will move you through the familiar locations in great detail. Plenty of environmental objects can be used as weapons, although these will break over time and you will be reduced to fending off monsters bare-fisted. Possibly foreseeing plenty of late-night bedtime play, Konami are exploiting the nature of the portable system to heighten the sense of isolation in the game.

Recently announced at E3, Silent Hill V is set to stay true to its psychologically chilling roots. It follows Alex Shepherd, a war veteran who returns home to find his family in disarray: his brother and father are missing, and his mother is catatonic. Vowing to find his brother, Alex eventually finds himself in Silent Hill, where more is uncovered about the fog-shrouded town.

Puzzles in V will be enhanced, as will the atmosphere and adventure you’ve uneasily come to know over the series. Acclaimed composer Akira Yamaoka will also return to provide a nerve-racking sonic backdrop.
