When something has been boldly touted as a success, its quite often necessary for such a statement to be backed up by solid figures. So here it is: In September alone, 528,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold worldwide, compared to 501,000 for Wii and 119,000 for PS3. This represents twice as many 360’s sold in August. Pretty solid feat considering Halo 3 was released only during the tail end of the month.

  • Microsoft Xbox 360: 527.8K (6.8 million total)
  • Nintendo Wii: 501K (4.5 million total)
  • Nintendo DS: 495.8K (13.2 million total)
  • Sony PlayStation 2: 215K (39.3 million total)
  • Sony PSP: 284.5K (8.6 million total)
  • Sony PlayStation 3: 119.4K (1.87 million total)

  • And surprise, surprise, software sales have been led by Halo 3, single-handedly raising the console’s software sales for the month 64% to $550.5 million ($170 million of which occurred on Halo 3’s first day of sales).

The Xbox 360 also continues to be a dominant platform in the top 10 software titles, with Skate, Madden, Bioshock and Metroid Prime 3 selling well.
