Irrational had trouble finding a publisher for BioShock

It seems that nearly everyone who has played the recently released BioShock demo comes away ranting about the most immersive first-person shooter experience yet - making it hard to believe Irrational Games had great difficulty finding a publisher for the game.
Joe McDonagh, senior designer of BioShock, first arrived at Irrational in 2004 as a Business Development Director. His first task was to find a publisher for the game, and while countless publishers knocked them back during the period, it was the one who referred to BioShock as “just another fucking PC FPS that’s going to sell 250,000 units” that served particularly memorable.
In a recent interview with CVG, he said:
Something I realised very quickly was that as much as your boss won’t ever know that you turned down a future game of the year, he will know that you signed up a turkey. You don’t get fired for not taking risks. That kind of mentality is driving the industry into a creative cul de sac.
