Sales figures from GfK released by the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia (IEAA) show that the local games industry has broken the AUD$1 billion (USD$865 million) mark for the first time.

Since January 1, over 5.5 million games and nearly half a million consoles have been sold in Australia - a market increase of 30 per cent.

“This is a spectacular result for the Australian gaming industry. Breaking through the $1 billion mark highlights the seriousness and sheer scale of the industry in Australia,” says Chris Hanlon, CEO of IEAA.

We can only hope that this success opens some eyes, and leads to the games industry receiving the same tax breaks and funding that nurture the local film and television industry.
