The NES cartridge clock

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

nes-cartridge-clock.jpg

This one is probably capable of speaking for itself, but if you’re already the proud owner of Mario & Luigi air fresheners, a NES tattoo and a Super Mario subwoofer - chances are you’re looking for something else to prove to the world that Nintendo played a more important role in your upbringing than your parents ever could.

Etsy comes through with the goods again, with this clock made from a Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cartridge, yours for just $18 plus shipping.

The NES case mod

Monday, October 8th, 2007

nes-pc-case-mod.jpg

A resourceful case modder has managed to install a Vista-equipped PC into a NES case. The mod includes a 1.33 MHz Celeron processor, 1GB of RAM, Sony DVD burner, 160GB Seagate hard drive, WiFi, Bluetooth and a nVidia GeForce 5200 graphics card. Even sweeter? A NES controller has been modded to function as the mouse. The item was posted for sale on Craigslist, and sold for a paltry USD$800.

Originally placed on ThinkGeek as an April Fools joke, the overwhelming demand forced the company to take the product seriously. The tie sports an ultra-nerdy clip-on design, is 20 inches in length and retails for US $19.99.

The Mario Brothers Cake.

Kotaku reader and Blizzard Entertainment employee Cory has provided pictures of the ultimate geek wedding. Yes, that’s a three tier Mario cake, complete with oddly-placed underwater level, made by professional cake maker Erica Obrien.

Armed with the knowledge that video game cakes are a fairly common occurrence these days, Cory had Union Ice sculpt a very special ice luge - the Master Sword and Hylien Shield from The Legend of Zelda.

Super Mario Bros controlled with sound

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

A group of musically minded gamers have developed an emulation of the NES classic Super Mario Bros. that uses sound as a means for control. Players can sing, clap or play musical instruments in order to advance Mario through the stage. While it’s currently more of a crazy student project than a releasable game concept, we wouldn’t be surprised to see something like this turn up on the microphone-equipped Nintendo DS eventually.

I’m just hoping they saved the 30 worst pieces for a later post.

The PainStation brings pain to Pong

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

painstation.jpg

Ever thought that video games would be more fun if they inflicted pain on the loser? Thanks to Volker Morawe and Tilman Reiff from the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, therapy is no longer your only option.

While PainStation is based on Pong, which should need no explanation, the additions certainly do. Players place their left hand on a Pain Execution Unit and their right hand on the controls. Pain Inflictor Symbols are randomly placed on the playing field, and are activated when the ball hits them, inflicting different types of hurt on the player who next misses the ball.

Automatic Mario levels taken to new, musical extremes

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Once upon a time, long before this site existed, someone with a lot of spare time on their hands hacked Super Mario World, adding a level that completed itself without any input from the user.

I’m not sure they were aware of quite how far the obsessive-compulsive meme-junkies that inhabit the dark corners of the internet were going to take this obscure new pastime.

Now the “Automatic Mario” meme has been cross-pollinated with the end theme from the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Hare Hare Yukai, a rampant internet phenomenon in and of itself. Yes, this hacked level completes itself and manages to sound like the end theme from an anime at the same time.

An undeniably brilliant effort that raises the question - where on earth will they take this one from here?

Sealed Game Heaven: for the truly obsessive collector

Monday, September 17th, 2007

If you’re the kind of collector who seriously considered spending US $10,000 on that completely useless Dreamcast Zip Drive, or a normal person looking for a hobby with more of a social stigma than just playing video games, you probably should meet this lot. Sealed Game Heaven is an international forum for people who spend small fortunes collecting video games still in their original factory shrink-wrap.

Check out this collection of every Dreamcast game released in Japan, still in original shrink-wrap:
