Scaffolding turned into Donkey Kong level

Giant Donkey Kong mural

Germans aren’t usually known for monkeying around, but that’s exactly what’s going on at the Computer Games Museum in Berlin. While undergoing construction, the museum jumped at the opportunity to convert the scaffolding into a giant Donkey Kong level. Brings a tear to the eye, doesn’t it?

Pac-man table top upright arcade

For those with space restrictions and a burning desire for an upright arcade machine, life has always been one of pain - until now that is. Homewares store Brookstone has added a miniature tabletop arcade machine to their lineup. The machine is adorned with Pac-Man graphics and includes Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga. At the price of $1,995.00 it is rather limited, though surely someone will work out how to hack it.

Reunion screening of The Wizard

Friday, October 19th, 2007

The folks from Ain’t it Cool News are putting together a reunion screening for the best videogame-based movie in history - The Wizard. Now I’m not exactly sure what prompted this apart from a profound appreciation of this seminal movie. Luke Edwards, (the Wizard himself), Fred Savage (!) and director Todd Holland will all be in attendance for the screenings and a Q&A. But sadly, powerglove-wielding Jackey “Lucas” Vinson, will not be at this event.

It’s on at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas on December 7th (7pm and 9:45pm screenings). I would wager good money that this will sell out fast, so if you’re in Austin or ready to make the pilgrimage, get on the Alamo’s website on Monday 5th November at noon for tickets.

Nintendo drops NES support

Nintendo drops NES support

Nintendo have done the unimaginable (mainly because we can’t believe it was still going on) and dropped support of the NES. After 24 years of service the little trooper is being laid to rest. This means that you’ll have to take extra good care of little Nessy now, as the big N won’t be helping you out when too much spittle gets blown into the cartridge port. On the upside, those with mint condition consoles just started getting a little bit richer. Nintendo have also let it be known that the SNES, Nintendo 64, Gameboy and Gameboy Pocket aren’t far from “going to live at a farm” either.

Atari equipped ‘79 Buick Riviera

There are some levels of style unobtainable by mere mortals, and pimping out a ‘79 Buick Riviera with an Atari 2600 may be one of them. Kevin, the maker of mod, kept it old school by installing an old knobbly 13” CTR set sporting a fabricated Riviera logo to play the 2600 on. Kevin rightfully says that his car is his “absolute pride and joy.” Check out all the pics after the jump.

The NES shoe

Who NESs a shoe, honestly!

What happens when all the logical mods are done and when notoriety can no longer be achieved by some LEDs providing a nice glow effect? Well of course, you mod it into a shoe, which is exactly what someone has done with a NES and a Nike sneaker. The picture of the little beauty was allegedly taken in New York City at the end of the Sneaker Pimps’ nationwide tour.

Team Lando’s jaw dropping Nintendo fan Art

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

nintendo_fanart_team_lando.jpg
Its over 5 meters long, contains over 5,000 videogame characters, and is still a work in progress. 20-year-old Swedish twins Mange and Viggo, aka Team Lando, started this insane piece of fan art back in 1999 and intend to keep it going, adding characters outside of the Nintendo domain too. They’ve only got 25 more meters to go. Check out their gallery at DeviantArt for more brilliant pencil art and some sweet custom case designs too.

Quake ported to Flash

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

While it’s certain that Quake running in Flash would have severe detrimental effects on office/classroom productivity, we never knew it would also lead to a conference hall full of Flash developers cheering like they’d just won the lottery. Skip to 5:00 in the video to witness this special moment for yourself.
