The MACS (Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator) for Super Nintendo

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

…and you thought the Super Scope was obscure? Meet the MACS Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator for the Super Nintendo - perhaps the rarest video game and accessory in existence. Developed for the U.S. Army to increase the firing accuracy of recruits, the game uses an M16 replica of authentic size and weight for an input device, rather than a plastic approximation.

The cartridge label reads “MACS Moving Target Simulator (C) 1993 Sculptured Software, Inc” - presumably the same Sculptured Software that was responsible for the SNES ports of the Mortal Kombat series - however information is scarce.

n64_buy_sell_classic_games.jpg
You may have an N64 stashed away in a cupboard somewhere, along with a pining for some of those classic games that you never got to play. Or if you’re anything like me, you might have a desire for quick cash which far outweighs any trace of sentimentality. Either way, you’ll find the latest series at Racketboy really helpful: it’s a pricelist of the rarest or in-demand games for older consoles and handhelds, perfect for the potential buyer or seller.

I Wanna Be The Guy - the best, hardest 8-bit ROM hack ever

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

If you yawned your way through Asshole Mario, check out I Wanna Be The Guy. It’s actually a Battletoads ROM hack, but you’d never guess - a number of classic titles make cameo appearances. Check out this epic boss battle with Zangief from Street Fighter II, and download the game here if you’re not too scared.

Video of an entire play through the game is available at Nikumatic’s YouTube profile.

Pac-Man hoodie

If you’re scrambling for a gift for that guy who builds his own robots and always wears the same t-shirt with the nerdy joke you don’t get, then maybe you want to check out this Pac-Man hoodie. The downside of this plan is that you will have to go into a Hot Topic to buy one. Such a sacrifice is probably worth it when you consider the fact that the garment in question won’t be leaving your friends body for about a decade.

Rare Christmas card raises hopes of a Killer Instinct revival

Rare have either been hitting the eggnog a bit early or they are giving us a sneaky clue on their Viva Piñata and Banjo Kazooie themed Christmas card. The clue is on the innocuous stocking marked KI3. Could this mean that a new Killer Instinct game is on the way? Unfortunately when quizzed about it Rare says not:

“Purely out of contractual obligation, no, we’re not working on KI3.”

Oh well, looks like it’s back to getting our asses handed to us in Mortal Kombat DS.

Scaffolding turned into Donkey Kong level

Giant Donkey Kong mural

Germans aren’t usually known for monkeying around, but that’s exactly what’s going on at the Computer Games Museum in Berlin. While undergoing construction, the museum jumped at the opportunity to convert the scaffolding into a giant Donkey Kong level. Brings a tear to the eye, doesn’t it?

Pac-man table top upright arcade

For those with space restrictions and a burning desire for an upright arcade machine, life has always been one of pain - until now that is. Homewares store Brookstone has added a miniature tabletop arcade machine to their lineup. The machine is adorned with Pac-Man graphics and includes Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga. At the price of $1,995.00 it is rather limited, though surely someone will work out how to hack it.
